Jun. 2nd, 2010 @ 12:52 pm Why sandchigger is awesome
I met Chigg on the Shadownessence gaming forums, where we quickly became fast buddies.

Bryce is an incredibly funny guy. His form of humour tends to be in the "OMG I shouldn't be finding this funny but I do" type, yet he never crosses the line into just being crude. I don't know anyone else who's able to pull that off.

He's also really really easy to talk to. He's really skilled at keeping the conversation going, even when I'm having trouble putting two words together. And he's good at talking about all sorts of subjects, from the very silly to the very serious and personal, all while making me feel like I'm being listened to. And that can be invaluable when I really need someone to talk to.

Plus, he seems very much in touch with what's going on in the Internet, and is good at filtering that down to just what's actually interesting.

And that's why I like sandchigger, and why you will too.

Hey, flisters! Post in the comments here, and I'll write a post about why I think you're awesome, why you're on my f-list, and why you should be on other peoples' f-lists.

Why? Just because. I feel like publicly appreciating people.

Not a meme, but it can be if you want it to.

May. 15th, 2010 @ 06:52 am Need a dummy Exchange server
So, I have this BlackBerry. My work used to have a BES that I could use with it, but that's now offline, and it's not likely to come online any time soon.

I have IT policies on my BlackBerry that I want to change, so I can use certain programs that I can't right now. Even unlocking my phone doesn't seem to do all of it.

So, I tried installing BES Express. Unfortunately it wants a valid Microsoft Exchange server to be able to install. I don't even have email set up on my BlackBerry (I just use the Gmail app), so I have no need to use the email. But I can't install the BES Express so I can associate my BlackBerry with it and change the IT policies without it.

Any ideas?

Apr. 27th, 2010 @ 03:09 pm Two technologies I think will seriously change the Internet in the next few years
Tags:
1. 100 mbit/sec wireless connections. Depending on how the FCC (and the CRTC) ends up using the freed bands that digital television gives this will be very likely, and somewhat soon.

2. IPv6. We're getting very close to IPv4 address space exhaustion, and once we hit that people are going to be rushing to switch over to IPv6.

Now I'm assuming a few things on top of this. That relatively quickly mobile devices will have public IPv6 addresses, instead of doing something stupid like sticking them behind NAT. Some carriers will probably try that at first, but given how many advantages there are to having a device be directly routable I don't see them staying that way for long, if people can't use their distributed Internet phones and whatnot on those carriers.

Another is that IPsec will be standard. I don't think this is a huge assumption though. If it is then it becomes basically impossible to shape connections to limit things like bittorrent.

What this will mean is that you can take your wireless enabled device anywhere, have a fast enough connection that high quality streaming video will be taking up a fraction of it, and allow it to be distributed so you won't have to depend on any sort of central server or play with router settings to get it to work.

I'm not sure what this will produce really, but I think it's going to be rather crazy, and I also think it will be a big plus for those freedom of information sorts of people.

So I was reading this article: http://www.cbc.ca/technology/story/2010/04/15/dna-mitochondrial-disease.html?ref=rss and it got me thinking about science fiction settings. Specifically aliens who do that as part of the reproductive process. The donor for the mitochondria would be a third sex though.

Now how that would all work biologically is somewhat interesting, but what I find even more interesting is ideas for a third gender. Assuming that the male and female gender roles are a lot like they are in our society, would there be room for a third gender, and if so, what could it be like?

Question for you Vampire the Requiem/Masquerade fans.

It is becoming easier and easier to get by without being up during daylight hours. More and more 24 hour services are being offered, more night shifts are going on, and more can be done over the Internet for those who have a high enough Humanity to be surfing during dawn/dusk. At the same time it is becoming more and more difficult to be a ghost. Just going and making a fake drivers license won't get you nearly as far as it would 30 years ago. New and changing technology is also becoming more important to understand if you want to remain relevant.

So how would this affect the power struggles between the younger generation against the older generations?

You should be able to do what you want with your property unless it can be demonstrated that what you are doing is causing harm, and lowering your neighbours property values doesn't count. That said, if you aren't doing something at all with your property then other people should be able to use your property for their own purposes, but they should vacate the moment you start to make use of it, and anything you leave behind becomes theirs.

Sales taxes and other such flat taxes are wrong. Progressive taxes like income tax should be where the bulk of the money the government gets from its population should be coming from. This is different from fines and whatnot that are actually designed to curb behaviours.

Work visas and the like should be eliminated. If you're allowed in a country you should be allowed to stay and work for as long as you want. Legally this would be the equivalent of granting the rights of permanent residency to whoever wants to live here. A waiting period for things like health care makes sense though, but not an application process that can be rejected for any reason besides the person not actually fulfilling the waiting period.

Every citizen should be able to vote, and every vote should count just as much as any other. The details on how to do that is what I'm not sure on.

A government should put its own citizens and residents first. The economy should be used to help everyone. Which isn't the same as throwing the baby out with the bathwater mind you. If your economy is in shambles you're not going to be able to help anyone.

I wish I could change Stephen Harper's political beliefs and stick him as head of the NDP.

With the current system municipal elections should be the most important kind of elections for most people. But there just isn't enough information that I can find to help me make an informed decision there. I can't even figure out how the city council works here.

The ends justify the means. But the means are part of the calculation for determine the value of the ends.

Tags:
OK, first off, this rant is not aimed at anyone who has any sort of social phobia or the like. It's about people who are fine with being contacted, but just through some picky little way.

It drives me nuts. Because if I want to get in contact with someone I have to remember the special way to do so for that person. And it seems like everyone has a different method. One person can only be called at home, and leaving a voice message works as well. Someone else never answers their home phone, but their cell works great. Someone else will only respond to SMS messages. And then there's someone else who's good about email, but good luck trying any sort of synchronous communication. And that's not even touching the people who don't use any form of electronic communication for the most part, but still manage to have a very active social life, so they're always saying "we should hang out and do such and such" at parties and other gatherings, but there's no way to actually *plan* any of that because it's not the sort of thing you do at a party.

And so I then have to keep a mental list (I suppose I could try keeping some sort of notes in my contact list, I might actually do this) of who is best contacted with which method. And god forbid I try to plan a party, especially if I'm inviting people that I haven't yet figured out their communication quirks.

Me, I can be contacted easily. There have been times where one or two methods don't work great, but that's because of technological issues (like cellphones going missing and the like) instead of me dictating how the world should talk to me. I wish more people were like me in this regard.

OK, I think I'm done now.

I have a bit of an odd setup right now, and I want to make the most out of my equipment.

I have an iMac running OS 10.4.11 with one video out display. I have two extra external monitors. And I have an Ubuntu box running StumpWM (it's an older machine) as the "window" manager.

What I would like to do is have one monitor plugged into the iMac (I already have that part actually), and the other one plugged into the Ubuntu box. I would like to have a way to then control the Ubuntu box using the same keyboard and mouse that are plugged into the iMac, but have the display show up on the monitor plugged into the Ubuntu box. I don't want to go buying any extra equipment to do this.

Does anyone have some suggestions on how I might go about this?

Mar. 4th, 2010 @ 10:44 am I think priorities are a bit messed up
So according to the radio the Ontario government is going to be laying off more nurses. This is despite a rather serious nursing shortage here.

In the meantime the Federal government (which does do transfer payments to provinces to help with things like health care) is matching donations to help in Haiti after the earthquake. This money has not been applied to actually help anyone in Haiti yet. It will likely be quite some time until it is. In fact, there's still a lot of money that was donated for the 2004 tsunami (let alone things like Katrina) which still hasn't been spent yet.

This is really frustrating. I don't like the fact that more people will die here because of an even more underfunded health care system while money that could help with that is going to not help people in Haiti.

I read the comments on a CBC news post about same sex marriage being legalized in Washington D.C. And of course there was one of those typical homophobic comments about "decadence and cultural decay".

OK, so I get where the commenter is coming from with the "cultural decay" part. It's a horribly wrong and bigoted statement, but I do understand what the commenter is saying when they wrote that. What I don't get is the "decadence" part. And now that I think about it I've seen that comment expressed a lot of time by homophobic bigots.

When I think of decadence I think of lounging around by a pool eating chocolate cake and getting hammered. Or maybe having breakfast in bed delivered while I'm getting a massage. They key point is it's something really really pleasurable taken past the point of being healthy, be that physical or spiritual or emotional or whatever form of health. So what that means is the commenter is saying that actual gay marriage has too much homosexual yummyness to it to be healthy. That maybe just having the occasional same sex fling could be a good reward for yourself for having worked really hard at the gym all month. But for marriage you should be sticking to the less satisfying but more healthy heterosexual marriage.

I'm not trying to just bring up the old and very tired "hur hur all homophobes are just closeted" comments which I see some people do, as that implies that being gay makes you hate yourself more or something. But I'm really having trouble understanding how else I'm supposed to read that use of the word "decadence".

Feb. 25th, 2010 @ 11:02 am How to make your public Livejournal posts show up in Google Buzz
OK, so for those less concerned with the privacy of their LJ here is how to have your Livejournal posts show up in in your Buzz stream.

First, you need to make sure that your Livejournal is searchable. Go to http://www.livejournal.com/manage/settings/?cat=privacy and uncheck "Search Inclusion" if it is checked.

Then add your Livejournal (not the profile) to your Google Profile.

Then create a link on your Livejournal profile (you can do a custom S2 link if you really want I think, but there's no point) to your Google Profile, adding in the attribute ref="me". (I can help with this step if you need it, or any other step really.)

Go to https://sgapi-recrawl.appspot.com/ , log in with your Google Account, and add your LJ (this happens automatically eventually, but it could take weeks from my understanding).

Once they're linked there go to Buzz, click on the link showing how many connected sites you have, and add your Livejournal.

Any public posts you make from now on (or made not too long before you set this up) will now be posted by you in Buzz.

Feb. 25th, 2010 @ 10:41 am For people concerned about their LJ privacy
If you would like to make it more difficult to have your Livejournal show up on searches here are some tips. Please keep in mind that my journal is indexed, so if you are really concerned do not make any comments on public posts of mine, including this one, and I will totally understand if you want to remove me from your LJ and have me remove you from mine.

Most people have their public LJ posts indexed by Google, because that is the default setting for Livejournal. You can find out who by typing into Google:

site:[username].livejournal.com livejournal

as a search query, with [username] being replaced with the user name in question. If anything shows up their posts are indexed by Google.

You then would have three options. You can ask that they click "Search Inclusion" under http://www.livejournal.com/manage/settings/?cat=privacy , you can remove them as well from your LJ friends page.

You will probably also want to go to http://www.livejournal.com/manage/settings/?cat=privacy and click "Comment Search Inclusion" to limit how much you will show up in other people's journals.

To see how much your username shows up in Google type as a search:

site:livejournal.com [your username]

There are similar searches that you can run on other search engines. Please keep in mind that any changes you make to improve security will usually take several weeks to show up on the search engines.

To see what other information about you is online I recommend going to http://pipl.com/ and running some various searches for your name, usernames that you use, email addresses that you use, and so on.
