So because of a long story I've been stuck with my home computer being a Vista machine that was a present from me to my wife (it said XP on the info when I went to order it online) that has been running horribly slow since day 1. And my wife won't let me do stuff like install a different OS on it, and it just isn't a financial priority right now to upgrade or replace the hardware.

I've tried all sorts of performance tweaks before, but the best it got was from being always stupidly slow, to being randomly stupidly slow like half the time, and the other half the time just sluggish.

Last night I had the brilliant idea to play around with the page file settings. Today I did most of that, as well as made a few more tweaks.

I set the page file to be a constant size (10 gigs in my case, it's only got 1 gig of RAM), disabled indexing (I end up using things like the find command in cygwin for that anyway since that tends to be faster than using Windows Search), turned off some stuff like various Apple services (I don't own an iWhatever or use iTunes, although I didn't do this before because they never seemed to use much resources), plugged in a 4GB thumb drive for use for ReadyBoost (it came in a pack of 4 for $16, so I had one that no one is using anyway), set Windows to wipe the pagefile on shutdown, and rebooted twice (since I wasn't sure if the pagefile configuration change would happen until I next booted and then shut down).

And holy crap this thing is very much usable now. It's only been a bit so I'll have to see how it goes after a few days of use, but things are *very* promising.

I just thought I'd share in case this helps someone else with a similar problem, even though I don't know which changes specifically helped.

To start up a program that uses X when logged in remotely (such as through ssh), you need to type this in from the remote login Bash shell:

export DISPLAY=:0

Then invoke the program the way you would locally from the shell.

Hint: Add that line to ~/.bashrc to have it happen automatically every time you log in.

I've been trying to figure this out for years, so I thought I'd share.

Apr. 16th, 2012 @ 10:39 am Getting a rolling screen while booting from arch linux installer
So, this problem is one that originally existed for me with the latest Ubuntu stable live CD. It did not happen with an old Live CD I had from 2007. I ended up trying the netboot install CD for Arch because I've been thinking of switching to this distro anyway, and when I saw the same problem happening I thought I'd come here. I gave this preamble because it might help point to where the issue is (something in more recent versions of the kernal maybe?)

So here's what happens. I boot from the 64 bit netinstall CD. It goes along the boot process fine until I get to:

Waiting for udev uevents to be processed

Note, I'm only pretty sure that's what it says, as I have to write it down from my own memory as the screen is unreadable after that point.

A bit after that the screen starts scrolling rapidly, like it's out of sync or something. I can't really read anything on the screen because it's scrolling so fast.

In terms of hardware I have an older 64 bit system, with a video card going to an analog TV (old style, not HD). I think I can get more hardware info from the install CD from the menu before it actually gets to booting up the system, if there is some sort of specific information that would help.

I've tried adding nomodeset, 1 and s to the kernel line (all separately), no effect.

Thanks in advance for all your help.

So, lets say you have a bunch of files in /home, in the root partition. Lets also say you have mounted another partition onto /home. Is there a way to get rid of all the files in /home on the root partition without having to unmount the other partition from /home?

Edit: The way to do it is to mount the root partition again on another mount point. Also, doing what I just did and doing rm -rf * on the / of that partition instead of /home/ is probably not advised.

My dream was animated (first time that's happened that I can recall). Clark Kent had found information about Stark Enterprises that was revealing corruption issues. He dug deeper, and found evidence that they were being framed by a supervillian, and that there were tactics like killing lawyers for Stark Enterprises who came up with effective strategies. It ended with Superman fighting off the FBI and the justice department and helping Tony Stark suit up as Iron Man to go catch the people framing Tony Stark. Unfortunately my daughter calling for me woke me up at that point.

I Am A: Chaotic Neutral Elf Rogue (4th Level)

Ability Scores:

Strength-9

Dexterity-11

Constitution-10

Intelligence-15

Wisdom-13

Charisma-14

Alignment:
Chaotic Neutral A chaotic neutral character follows his whims. He is an individualist first and last. He values his own liberty but doesn't strive to protect others' freedom. He avoids authority, resents restrictions, and challenges traditions. A chaotic neutral character does not intentionally disrupt organizations as part of a campaign of anarchy. To do so, he would have to be motivated either by good (and a desire to liberate others) or evil (and a desire to make those different from himself suffer). A chaotic neutral character may be unpredictable, but his behavior is not totally random. He is not as likely to jump off a bridge as to cross it. Chaotic neutral is the best alignment you can be because it represents true freedom from both society's restrictions and a do-gooder's zeal. However, chaotic neutral can be a dangerous alignment when it seeks to eliminate all authority, harmony, and order in society.

Race:
Elves are known for their poetry, song, and magical arts, but when danger threatens they show great skill with weapons and strategy. Elves can live to be over 700 years old and, by human standards, are slow to make friends and enemies, and even slower to forget them. Elves are slim and stand 4.5 to 5.5 feet tall. They have no facial or body hair, prefer comfortable clothes, and possess unearthly grace. Many others races find them hauntingly beautiful.

Class:
Rogues have little in common with each other. While some - maybe even the majority - are stealthy thieves, many serve as scouts, spies, investigators, diplomats, and simple thugs. Rogues are versatile, adaptable, and skilled at getting what others don't want them to get. While not equal to a fighter in combat, a rogue knows how to hit where it hurts, and a sneak attack can dish out a lot of damage. Rogues also seem to have a sixth sense when it comes to avoiding danger. Experienced rogues develop nearly magical powers and skills as they master the arts of stealth, evasion, and sneak attacks. In addition, while not capable of casting spells on their own, a rogue can sometimes 'fake it' well enough to cast spells from scrolls, activate wands, and use just about any other magic item.

I just finished the 3rd edition of Nobilis last night, and I now really really want to run a LARP of it. The rules don't seem like they would need much at all in the way of changing, although I'm not sure logistically on how to track 6 potentially changing traits throughout a session (one of those being the wound levels).

I'm telling myself (and waterspyder) that I won't seriously work on running this until I get my driver's license though.

Canada. You probably get irritated when British people and Europeans think you're from the States, but over here we wouldn't make a mistake like that.

Dec. 6th, 2010 @ 05:38 pm The culture of silence in Ottawa
Tags: ,
I felt compelled to talk about something that's bothered me about this city since shortly after I moved here from Toronto 10 years ago, that is especially relevant in a BDSM context (although it certainly isn't limited to kinky circles).

There's a culture of silence here that really disturbs me. There have been a number of people over the years who have told me in confidence about being raped, assaulted, etc by other members of the community, but who are very afraid to speak publicly about it for fear of being ostracized. And I do think that fear is well founded. There is such an anti-gossip bias here that anyone who openly says anything bad about someone else local is going to find a lot of people not talking to them anymore.

Yes, to some extent this will happen anywhere, but it seems especially strong here. It makes me nervous to get involved in any capacity for fear that there are people who are repeat predators who are treated like upstanding members of the community.

Thing is, I don't know what to do about it. I'm not about to start saying things told me in confidence, and I can't in good conscience encourage people to speak out because the backlash against them will just end up making things worse. But it has reached the point where I feel I have to do something. Any suggestions?

Oct. 3rd, 2010 @ 03:14 pm City/Character creation session last night
Current Music: Nine Inch Nails - Even Deeper
So yesterday we have the city/character creation session for the Dresden Files game. Unfortunately due to scheduling issues not everyone could make it, but jagash, oni_neko and waterspyder were there. And I'm quite happy with how things turned out.

The city creation system was rather nifty. The game will be set in Ottawa, with the Winter Court and the White Court having a cold (no pun intended) war over the city, that's gone on for many years. There's also a wizard nun who secretly runs the University of Ottawa, and something that lives beneath Ottawa that doesn't like things digging into it (which explains the current issues with the LRT, as well as a whole bunch of stuff in the past going all the way to the number of deaths when the canal was dug).

The player characters are a bar owner who's the emissary of the collective unconscious (jagash), a very non-religious woman who's also one of the worlds greatest exorcists (oni_neko) and a nixie changeling that is very strongly resisting making any sort of choice, or Choice (waterspyder). Because of the way the character creation system works they're all tied together with a shared history, but they left a bit open to get tied in with characters being made at the next session on the 20th.

I'm really liking how things are turning out so far, and I'm very much looking forward to when the playing starts.

So I'm probably going to be setting the Dresden Files game I'm running in Ottawa. One of the steps for city creation in this game is to do research on the city its being set in.

So, what are nifty little facts/rumours about this city that might be useful? I'm looking for stuff of an occult nature, or of a criminal nature really, as the books at least are essentially about a wizard detective, and I'm thinking the game will probably go that route as well.

So I casted in the last Epoch LARP event, and I definitely want to bring back an old character of mine. Thing is, I don't want to do that until I have things like a costume together.

So I'm making this post to try to get ideas for what to wear. The LARP has a mishmash of clothing styles (and cultures), so I could go with anything from any (older, not suits and ties and whatnot) historical era and make it work; especially since the character is a bit eccentric. But this broad amount of availability is making it hard for me to choose.

The character is formerly wealthy, and likes to look the part. He gets into all sorts of business ventures, the higher the risk (and bigger the payoff) the better. It has to be something that I can transport easily, and have different layers so I can switch easily from hot 30+ degree weather to something in the mid teens with just a jacket or something. I also won't be able to do all sorts of wardrobe changes due to the need to transport the clothes easily (I'll probably be getting rides in other people's full cars), and it should be something that I can wear for a weekend, then throw in the washing machine when I get home.

So, any ideas on something that fits those requirements, and would look good on me?

Your result for The Secret Gender Test...

Hermaphroditic/Androgynous

41% Masculine!44% Feminine

Likelihood if you got this result, it's either because you have behaviour equally matched of both genders or neither. This result means your gender identity is androgynous. This means that you can probably equally understand average men and women, but don't understand super-men and super-women all that well. Your male and female side is either well balanced, or not present in the normal manner. Your sexual inclination is either dual-role, or asexual. This means you may very well be single because of a lack of the same compelling drives average men and women have in this world. Your also very likely gender-queer, or non-gender conforming. Meaning, male or female you dress androgynously. Some people may even refer to you as a gender-bender.

This doesn't mean you won't, and there is a chance that your still have some growing up to do, and given a lack of experience of your gender has left you with little to speak of in the sense of what this test can provide. Sometimes gaining experience with reference with the questions will result in a conclusion that is different from this one. Either way, your balanced. If this is what you want then you are happy, and among a fairly small group of people in the world satisfied by gender neutrality.

Whether you were born male or female, your brain is variably somewhat intersexed, and if you were born intersexed then this would also be consistent. You have senses and abilities of both sexes likely to varying degrees. You can date any other gender type easily, though the greater extremes will still be difficult. There really isn't a gender type you can't date as long as you understand what dating that particular type entails. All this being said, your ideal types are likely as close to centre as you, or gender neutral, or gender reversed. Those groups are likely to have respect for your androgynous nature. You have an experience where gender is concerned that makes you an ideal counsellor for issues regarding gender for others.

If you were born male, your very androgynous, or you lack strongly defining deviations from male or female aspects. If you were born female the above applies as well, however female androgyns are more prevalent do to societal acceptance than male androgyns. It's more acceptable for women to be tomboyish than men to be femmeboyish. You can date any other type, but standard and higher male and female types may and most likely will not understand your gender neutrality. As long as you understand this and take your balance and use it to your advantage you will manage okay.

My hands were so sweaty from the heat that I just dropped and broke a drinking glass. Luckily I seem to have found all the shards.

So Kerry baked a lot of pie. More than we could possibly eat before it all goes bad.

So who wants to come over and help us eat it? You will have to not mind the mess.

I promise I'll get to the posts about how awesome people are soon.

But in the meantime I've been thinking about myself as a GM. When I'm playing a game I want very long lasted storylines. Basically, when I make a character I want to be able to theoretically go on forever.

But when I'm running games I find a bit after a year I get bored, or dissatisfied, or wanting to do something different. I'm that way right now with the Exalted game I've been running. Thing is, I plan to run games the way I would want to play. So I plan on them being open ended. Then I end up disappointing myself (and probably my players) by having the game fall apart after awhile.

So maybe I need to learn how to run games with a beginning, middle, and end planned.

I originally met Lola through the burn community. Later on I found out she had an LJ, and thus added her here.

I have to say that she originally intimidated me. She's smart, very creative, multitalented, highly accomplished and capable, as well as totally hot. I basically didn't know why she would want to talk to me. But then I got to know her better through her LJ and I got to see other sides of her. She's very warm and caring. She's very good at keeping me at ease. She's also shown me some of her more vulnerable side, which makes me feel honoured, as she has to (for unfortunately very valid reasons) keep those aspects of her hidden.

She also posts some absolutely amazing recipes, as well as wonderful descriptions about her trips around the world.

And that's why you will find slobberpuppy totally awesome.
